The terminology on the new visual judging sheets doesn't specifically state "Color Guard", it's all about the marching and all of the visual elements working well with the music from a design point and a quality of performance point of view. To restate it, the sheet judges how well the visual elements of the show work based on what you gave the kids to perform and how well they perform it. So, will not having a guard impact your score? No. But you must have stuff in your show that gives your show a good visual package and have it performed at a quality level to have a decent score.
Here's an example: what school who was a finalist at SMC in 5A this year had no color guard? They had a fabulous visual package and never used a flag. All they had was a drill team. Their visual scores were better than their music scores. Congrats to Weiss High School!
