Re: HD missing a day to work at other job
"Earlier in my career I would have balked at..."
My guess it that the OP is earlier in their career. I haven't missed a day other than TMEA in over 4 years, but as I'm getting a bit older I can definitely see myself taking some days to rest and recover. If a side hustle is re-energizing for the HD, then so be it. We have the days in our contract, we just never take them because we have all those other (unpaid) days off and feel guilty about it. Actually most us don't feel guilty, we're just workaholics, but you get the point.
So as a HD I'll weigh in with my two cents.
If all of your responsibilities for the semester have concluded (all region, S&E prep, Christmas concert, etc), does it matter?
I'm missing two and a half days next week because I'm taking my family on vacation. This will be the first time in the almost 10 years I've been teaching that I will miss work for family time. Earlier in my career I would have balked at taking a personal day for this. Now, since I've realized that family does come first, I am actually looking forward to spending time away from the office and with just the two of them. My co-workers will be picking up a little slack, but not so much that it's going to be a huge loss for me to be done the two and a half days prior to Christmas break. S&E work will abound.
I know it may be frustrating to have to pick up their slack, but they're doing what they have to do. It's only a short time, you'll be okay.
