Picture this: there are 90 clarinet players that audition and your best clarinet player who works their but off misses all region by 1 chair. Meanwhile, your bass trombone player prepares only 2 etudes but makes it because there were only 2 that tried out.
Then, your brass players play for a judge that did not give hardly any ones that day while your Flute players all get ones from their judge because they were feeling nice.
Since it is a UIL award, we just require participation in the 3 UIL events. Marching, Solo/Ens and C/SR. They have to participate in all 3 their 9th and 10th grade year and they get their jacket at the beginning of their junior year. If not, they get i their senior year if they stay in band.
We can control who goes to those contest by how they prepare their music and we then have complete control of the process.
