We didnít end up going to UIL last year but we played Plaza de Toros and Dorian Chant so I donít want to repeat those.
I was thinking Sakura and Courtlandt County Festival. Iíd really like to try Night Fury, but while I think Iíll have enough clarinets who play the clarinet 1 part, Iím not 100% certain.
Any other thoughts?
Flutes: (4) 8th graders, all with severe ďI donít give a crapĒ attitudes. They rarely come to sectionals, one has never come. Two of them sounded very good last year but I canít count on them to do anything outside of class. Capable, but I canít give them anything that requires ďworkĒ.
Clarinets: (11). Probably my best section. Can make a really good group sound when they focus. A handful could probably play over the break OK, but they havenít had to prove it too much yet.
Altos (4). OK players, should be better. For sax players, they actually play too quietly and I constantly have to tell them to play out.
Bari Sax (1) Good player, good sound. Can handle the bari parts just fine.
French Horns (2) One OK, One weak.
Trumpets (9) Very mixed bag. Only 2 are good. The rest are very weak to mediocre. Canít play together well as a section yet. The other band director has pulled them every day for the last week and a half. Iíll see how theyíve progressed by the end of the week. Would generally prefer something with 2 trumpet parts so I can split them.
Baritones (2) One strong, one OK.
Trombones (7) 3 are good, 2 are mediocre, and 2 can barely play. Getting better as a section, but theyíre not good at using their ears and adjusting yet.
Tuba (1) OK player, but is always sick. Missed 45 days last year and has already missed almost as many this year. I canít assume heíll play with us at UIL and have to assume Iíll have no tuba when picking music and canít have anything with an independent part.
Percussion (5) One good snare player and one who loves timpani and is good at it. I have a saxophone player who switched this year whoís coming along on mallets. Other 2 are mediocre. (Of course I try to teach them all percussion but these are their strengths.)
