Re: rash from metal mouthpiece
I have a tuba player who is having the same issue. Put him on a Kelly Mouthpiece and it seemed to help a while. Now the irritated ring is back. I ended up switching him to Tenor Sax. Wasn't my first choice, but the parents are being quite insistent. Yes, they did take him to a dermatologist, but the guy just said, "well have him take a month off from the mouthpiece and try a different metal." This wasn't an acceptable solution. So, tenor sax it is...

I have a beginning student who seems to be getting a rash on his mouth from playing trombone. His mother has told me he cannot wear any metal against his skin because it will cause him to break out (like a chain or bracelet). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help this; we have talked about getting a plastic mouthpiece for him. Thank you for your help.
