Put the kid on bass clarinet for a year, if they're big enough/strong enough to hold one. Those usually have plateau keys.
I've got a 7th grade clarinet player who has extremely tiny fingers. They're so small that he has trouble covering the holes. We hoped that he'd have a growth spurt over the summer, but it just never happened. He's got a good embouchure, but his own anatomy is holding him back. Has anyone ever experimented with the concept of plugs for a clarinet? Nothing to cover the entire key, of course. Just to make the actual holes that he'd have to cover with his fingers smaller.
