It used to drive me crazy when they would never use my last name- just 'Miss" and when it was brought to my attention what others in this thread have said about the origins of this in the hispanic community I realized it was the hispanic or white children that were raised in a hispanic household that did this. Once I decided to accept it as a term of endearment (rather than lazy kids that just said "hey band teacher" ) it was a lot more tolderable .
for a while I would respond with "yes child?" and it worked a little but usually met with annoyance
just accept and move forward. there are worse things to be called!
