Re: Alternate assignment for missed performances
I had a big problem with this several years ago. I made the kids who missed come up to the front and play their part for the class while the other students wrote glows and grows for them. I read all the student writing and threw away any mean comments, and gave the students an honest grade based on how they played. I took points off because it was "late" but other than that I graded as I would a test. Three of those kids dropped next year and the rest never missed another concert.
If it's an assignment to make up for several performances, I'd assign a solo from the UIL PML that's appropriate for his playing level. Preferably, one that you have a recording of the accompaniment to have him play along with for his makeup grades.
Long story short....kid misses several performances due to dad holding him out because of low grades in other classes. Iím being told I HAVE to give him an alternate assignment to cover the same TEKS.
