Would that be "lazy" band directing - guaranteeing that your kids are consistently exposed to some of the all-time greatest literature in our profession?
I think there's something to be said for every kid in a HS varsity program getting to play at least one of the Holst Suites in their high school career. There's a reason it's great music. Same with marches - do a King, a Sousa, a JJ Richards, and a Fillmore, and mix in a transcription every fifth year. Would that be "lazy" to play music by the greatest march composers?
Seriously. Let people run their programs the way they want to, and you run yours. Don't call someone lazy because they have a difference of opinion from you.
Finally - one of these days I'll spend a couple hours on Brynnpark and list all of the pieces on the Grade 5 list that are never or almost never performed. I bet it's more than we think.
