Re: Nervous on podium
Recognize that leading a rehearsal, and teaching in general, is more random than most of us are willing to admit. Before you go to sleep at night, rest your mind by saying to yourself, "I have a plan, but I'll also react spontaneously to any issues that arise or elements of my plan that don't work out, and it will be fun and interesting!" Certainly, more and more thinking does not produce a better rehearsal, but being in the moment when you're on the podium can have wonderful effects.
I think for all of us, once the first performance of the year is done we are much more relaxed overall. You probably have one coming up. That one act -- conducting a group in a successful performance -- is usually a big confidence booster.
Iím teaching a high school SNV band. My first year to do it. Iíve been putting a lot of time and preparation into it but find myself getting pretty nervous a couple of hours before my rehearsal. Iíve actually been waking up a little before my alarm in the morning and my mind begins to race thinking about the rehearsal which is first period. Anyone ever experienced this? Basically how can I calm the heck down so Iím more relaxed when rehearsing the band?
