Okay...if that's the reason for the change, I don't see how that will be enforced since no one is in anyone else's band hall to see what they are or are not doing. I personally have enough to work on with my own band program and have no time to keep up with what a neighboring band program is doing. No, I think I'll stick to staying away from Honor Band and just teach and do local stuff and UIL. When we entered decades ago we made the state finals and came in 3rd. In stopped entering because there were other things that I wanted to do for the kids during concert season.
This change happened because of .. unscrupulous .. band directors that would hand out the Honor Band music early.
Like in May of the school year before. Then they would schedule mandatory summer practices once a week all summer long to get ready for the contest. (Don't say this didn't happen, I personally know a program that did this, and no, they didn't win)
It's not about teaching our own kids vs something else. It's about not gearing an entire school year (or worse, multiple school years) towards three songs that you record to earn a "spot" showing how great you are as a director. It's about preserving the integrity of the process.
Maybe you haven't paid attention because you admittedly haven't entered in decades. The fact is, it's a huge deal for some programs, and with some directors treating it as a metaphorical genital measuring contest, they needed to reel back some of the more blatant cheating that was going on.
I haven't submitted for Honor Band in decades so I'm out of the loop. So there has been a change now dictating what you can and can't work on or teach in your local band hall if you decide to submit for Honor Band? Really? I don't normally work on my UIL music until after Christmas anyway, but if this is a new rule, I think I'll stick to not entering the Honor Band contest. I think we are getting way too many restrictions with band. Where does it stop and when will we just start worrying about our teaching the kids in our own programs and leave the Joneses alone?
