What I needed to realize out of college was that the majority of kids will NOT practice outside of school at the MS level. If they do, they are the exception. Middle school band is NOT college. (I've never taught HS, but I assume it's similar to an extent.)
If you go into each rehearsal expecting to have each piece sounding exactly like it did the day before, and know that it will get better on only exactly what you work on, you'll save yourself some grief. And occasionally be surprised when a section sounds really good randomly.
I'm about to graduate from undergrad and was hoping some of you wiser ones on here could help me- what do you wish you could have done/wish someone had told you as a first-year teacher? Any advice?
