Re: Advice for 1st year teacher
Find a mentor. I was extremely lucky. After my first disastrous year (I resigned before I had another job) I was able to connect with a true master teacher who helped me find my way. He was gruff and "told it like it was", which may have turned some people off, but I found a way to get by that and I realized he had a heart of gold and really cared about me. This is why I'm in my 40th year and still going.
#1> take care of yourself. Get your rest. get a flu shot. take a multivitamin.
#2> Ask a LOT of questions. It's a busy job and sometimes people don't realize you need help unless you ask.
#3> Be realistic. Your band is probably not going to win honor band this year Next year-watch out.
#4> Know that you're going to have bad days and make mistakes. Normal and OK. 1-2 REALLY good days a week is pretty good your first semester.
#5> Don't stop playing your instrument. find a community band to play in.
#6> find something to do that is NOT band in your free time. You will need a mental break.
#7> ignore the bitter folks on the YB. It's a great job. Welcome aboard.
