Re: Student discipline and complicit parents
When taking over a program you have to come in full of fire and ready to push kids to the next level. Kids want to win and be successful. I have watched change in band programs and there was success through the change when the new leadership was able to come in and make the kids even better. Of course there is always push back. But kicking and screaming the kids are going to learn and do things the correct way and come back with the awards to prove that when you work hard good things happen. As far as punishments that must be done with great care that can become a job ender.
I had our band booster president come in for a long conversation this morning. Some people feel that there is not enough discipline in the band. Some think that students should have the authority of assign horses, laps, pushups. Talked about students wanting to transfer to another school for a better band or just quitting band all-together. Talked about the old band directors having an alternate line for the students who had marching problems. We had student leaders, including her son, miss contests for SAT or family reasons. All of this after we pulled off a 2, even though we had the most students out for no pass-no play that I have every had. Just fed up to the max.
