Re: Band vs. Football
to have a meeting with the principal, head coach and student to have a talk about supporting each group at school and to not make disparaging comments on social media.
So for the first time in my 9 years teaching I'm having the "band vs. football" thing happen.
The football team is having a rough go of things this year. They're 4-5, after going four rounds deep into the playoffs last year. The band has had a great year this year, a 5th consecutive 1st division at UIL, and two contests placing in the top 4 in the competitive portions of the contests, the best the band has had in at least a decade. It's been building little by little over the semester, and has now come to a head with a FB player pointing to the band of another school on social media and saying "Why can't we have that band?" at our football game this past Friday night.
For those of you who have dealt with this, what was one of the most effective ways that you found to quash the inevitable retaliation from band kids who are, in their minds, defending the program but only making it worse? And how did you handle the issue with the AD/Football coach and other Admin?
This is putting a stain on an otherwise great marching season and I don't want it to hinder us as we move into concert season; it goes against the positive culture we've spent years trying to build!
