I concur. Iím teaching in my home town in the program that I grew up in. Our middle school has made one I on stage in 80 years. The most successful stretch the high school has ever had is the last 7 years. Lack of awards notwithstanding, being in the band changed my life. It helped me realize what I could be, and showed me a way out of the problems that plague communities like ours. Without band, I would never have gone anywhere.
So I teach these kids who are like me and work to show them there are other ways than what they see at home/in town/on the news. I show them how good it feels to work hard and make other people happy, how important it is to care about something. From a competitive standpoint, everything about my job sucks, and it may ruin my chances to move on to a more successful position, but kids like this need people who care, and for now, thatís what I am.
