Re: Area every year
And I think UIL should just go ahead and have state marching for all classes every year. This Area every year without state is weak. One-Act Play, Sports, everyone seems to crown a state champion in all classes except for us. We are the oddballs every time in every instance. I think it hurts us more in small schools since we have kids in multiple activities being pulled by other sponsors and coaches. If a kid is on a good team and in a good band and it's non-state year for band, what do you think the kid will choose to give up if he feels as though he's stretched too thin? And I don't buy the state office's arguments and rationale. I have been doing this for over 30 years and I have yet to encounter even one superintendent who is in favor of every other year state marching. Not one that I've worked for or met. To this day, I still can't wrap my head around why we insist on taking more and more opportunities for achievement away from our kids while other activities find more and more ways to showcase their kids and programs. Maybe it's time for the old guard who started this nonsense to step aside and and stay off of committees and leadership positions and allow some new modern folks to take over.
Not sure why anyone is against this:
1) we spend all this time and money on these shows
2) meanwhile athletics will let anyone with a pulse in the playoffs and we are losing kids to these “successful” programs
3) you are not required to attend so if you don’t want to then don’t go
4) any chance to give my students another layer to work towards I am for. Football crowns two state champions per classification every year and we do 1 every two years
