Re: Why do some instruments transpose?
I tell my kids (and this is probably not far off base) that certain instruments transpose because it keeps their most common notes on the staff. With the exception of flute and tuba (the two extremes), this is largely true.
The beginners asked me that and (as a percussionist), I did not have a good answer.
I thought about it and I am thinking, "Why not just write the trumpet part like the flute part?" What is the actual reason it is put a step above the flute on the page?
Anybody have a good answer?
