Re: Why do some instruments transpose?
As a percussionist it never really clicked with me either until my kid bought an ocarina (and actually learned to play it well). It was tuned to C. Then I bought her an alto one that was in G, and finally realized that for the player it's exactly the same, it just sounds a 4th lower. I don't even think you could have that size instrument be a 'C' instrument without changing where the holes are drilled.
The beginners asked me that and (as a percussionist), I did not have a good answer.
I thought about it and I am thinking, "Why not just write the trumpet part like the flute part?" What is the actual reason it is put a step above the flute on the page?
Anybody have a good answer?
