Re: Why do some instruments transpose?
This is an extremely simplified version:
Before instruments had keys/valves, the early renditions of each instrument could only play in one/two keys signatures. If you wanted to play in different keys, you had to have different-sized instruments and cart them around with you.
With the additions of keys/valves, chromatics were possible and everyone just picked the best-sounding instrument.
The beginners asked me that and (as a percussionist), I did not have a good answer.
I thought about it and I am thinking, "Why not just write the trumpet part like the flute part?" What is the actual reason it is put a step above the flute on the page?
Anybody have a good answer?
