Re: Athletics vs. Band
I was just thinking this. Pops goes to town and hears from the old f@rts "I saw Billy had a nice tackle. He's lookin' good now." as opposed to "I saw Billy had a solo during halftime. Sounded good." Guess what Pops wants Billy to do more of even though Billy does both.
Don't know your community but having been in small schools for almost 30 years, I'd say it's the parent mentality. They push sports and look down on fine arts and band. They think Billy Joe or Minnie Lou will be professional sports stars one day and they reinforce this mentality with their kids. What can be done? Well sometimes just continuing to work and build you program works, sometimes it doesn't in some towns. Sometimes you have to decide to either stay and accept the mentality or move to another school that is more band friendly. In communities like you describe, sometimes they have to go through several band directors and actually hit rock bottom where a band director winds up quitting mid-year and they can't find anyone before they will wake up and change their attitudes. Sorry, I've been doing this a very long time and I've seen it play out more than once. There's a band that's really good and will be at the state marching contest next week that fit that description once upon a time, decades ago.
Ok I think we may have digressed a bit or I didn't explain it better LOL. Coaches work well with us for now. Its the kids who choose athletics over band. Their priorities are athletics. I feel like they have more fun in athletics than in band. I give grades for sectionals, test weekly on a music assignment, and give grades for performances.
I would like suggestions on how to change that mentality or that thought that athletics is more fun (if there is such a thing). LOL. They are loyal to athletics, don't miss deadlines for athletics and truly love it. What am I doing wrong?
Our kids nowadays shut down with pressure. I am noticing that more this year than in prior years. Being firm and setting strict expectations overwhelms them. So to me, they take the easy way out and they want to quit band or go to athletics where they enjoy it more. Suggestions or tips appreciated it. If I vented, I'm sorry. LOL.
Agreed, it's a principal issue.
If Athletics expects them for 8 hours a week, and you're asking for 1 of those 8...who's the unreasonable one in the situation?
