Re: Tuning Drums

Harmonic tuning is a thing. I have heard of some people tuning tenors in octaves to the basses. For me, I just make sure that the top bass is lower than the lowest tenor drum to prevent crossed voicing. Maybe consider going with smaller bass drums. Most lines use a 14" or 16" drum as the top drum.
I got a comment from a judge that I should tune my bass drums to match or blend with the tenors. I have never considered that before. I'm not a percussionist and I usually tune the tenors by m3 tuning the bottom to 'what sounds good'. Same with basses but with a P4 between the bottom two and M3 the other two. So my question is should the top bass drum (20") and bottom tenor match or be at an interval? Or something else?
