When I was in high school in the mid-60s and when I started teaching, it was said the conventional wisdom was that you didn't play Sousa marches, because there were still a number of Sousa's band members living and judging even in Texas. So nobody could play to their standards. The newer editions work much better for today's instrumentation, so a lot of bands have success with them now.
In the 70s it was also said to be a bad idea to play McBeth pieces, because what he wrote on the score was not how it was supposed to be played. Pretty confusing stuff.
