Re: Beginner Clarinets/Saxes....HELP!
Fuzzy, unsupported sounds seem to indicate to me that the students either aren’t anchoring their top teeth on the mouthpiece (wiggle test!) and/or that they are not engaging and pushing up with their right thumb, which also helps maintain contact with their top teeth on the mouthpiece. Secondary issues probably stem from their air—like the person below said, make sure they are blowing straight across the reed/mpc and not down into the clarinet.
Also, make sure that you’re constantly checking their reeds and reed placement.
Finally, if you feel totally lost with clarinet—It’s OK. Don’t beat yourself up about it. I highly recommend Marilyn Mattei’s “For Clarinets Only” beginner book—even if you just purchase the teacher book—she has great explanations and troubleshooting tips! Paula Corley’s method also has great material, I just find Mattei’s teacher book to be very concise and clear.
