Try having clarinets play with right hand down, and holding the barrel with their left hand, as if they're playing on MP and barrel. It can be hard to switch from something to small to the whole instrument, so reinforcing the need to get the embouchure proper is really important. I always started out like this, gradually moved to having the right hand down, left hand hovering over keys, and don't let the kids move on until they can do each step with the tone that I want. Also taught the first few notes with right hand down...all the way to D, I believe, even though that note sounds a little funny. Technique and notes can always be learned, but if you don't get tone correct from the beginning it's tough to fix later on. Good luck!
