1 - exceptions have been granted in the past for sound effects that are not exactly music. I'm not exactly sure how a "laugh" effect could be performed differently than just push the button and let it go...unless maybe a kid literally laughs into a microphone. It's still important that a student is the one triggering the sound effect.
3 - there was a discussion item at Region meeting in the spring about what constitutes a "small ensemble." Some people wanted UIL to put a number on what qualifies. Some people want to mic their entire clarinet section for the entire show as a "small ensemble." I have not heard any resolution on that question.
