Re: Morning Rehearsals and Free/Reduced Breakfast
Done my whole career at Title I. I always vote Democrat, but I am calling BS. If I could see everyone’s budget, I could show them how to squeeze out corn flakes and milk. Also, when we did it earlier, most wouldn’t get there in time. I guess the alarm on the cell phone doesn’t work? It’s always having the I can’t do it attitude that gets us present horror show politicians as a reaction to victim mentality for every little thing!
Well, first of all you don't know for a fact that ALL the families have money for Corn Flakes and a gallon of milk. Maybe most do but unless you have access to every single family's financial info and expenses you don't know.
I think it was an uncalled for comment for you to make and you would have been called on the carpet at my Title 1 school. People can figure things out in Title 1 schools if you treat them with respect and dignity. We are around 90% low socioeconomic here and our kids and parents pool resources and we are able to have extra rehearsals outside of school. These are KIDS. They have little control over their home life and situation.
Maybe another solution is to have rehearsals in the evenings instead of mornings? And if you say transportation is a problem, I've had that issue in the past and was able to either get the school to run an activity bus or arrange car pools. Or if you really are limited to having morning rehearsals, have a fund raiser use some activity money and you buy the gallon of milk and box of Corn Flakes and take 10 minutes of your band rehearsal and let them eat breakfast.
Title 1 schools are hard to work in. They are not for everyone. You have to be resourceful and patient. Those who can't don't belong in front of those kids. They need to find a middle or upper middle class community.
