How many directors are in your MS program??? How do you divide up your sectionals each week? We chunk the music into 3-6 measures a week so its not overwhelming. Most of my kids auditioning for region are 7th graders, so they logically feel overwhelmed even though we do pace it. We even have recordings for each instrument and even then, kids don't want to do it. I understand 16th notes exist in every spectrum of music basically. But I just need input on how others work their programs especially so kids won't feel overwhelmed. Thanks!
Well how are you having the kids learn their region music? Free-for-all? Is it metered out or divided out into chunks?
Also, how well are you preparing them pedagogically to learn the music? I know not every kid will be perfectly prepared for all of life's musical struggles but are your students aware of 16th notes and high B-flats outside of their region music?
For example, with my MS program, we make sure the kids know all of their scales (including chromatic), and we also teach all forms of rhythm (using Teaching Rhythm Logically) so that kids have every tool and nugget of knowledge they need to learn the music.
And then, we chunk the music into 8 measures for weekly chair tests, so it's more attainable.
I have the same kind of kids here - god forbid 16th notes exist lmao
