I retired in 2016 and I honestly believe that the bad situations we read about are the minority of band program situations here in Texas. There honestly are so many really fine band programs here in Texas and I'd bet that the silent majority of them are ones we never hear about aside from their performances and achievements.
Sure, there are many places that have become harder to teach in general as I hear some of the same negative comments from current teachers in other subject areas. But there are still so many band programs out there that likely continue to be the envy of the rest of the US.
I suspect that for every bad situation out there we hear about, there are probably many more good situations out there across the state that we don't hear about. I for one continue to be hopeful about the status of band programs here in Texas.
Me!! And I thank God every day for my situation! And I feel for those who are not faring so well.
I've been reading a lot of messages from directors who work in terrible situations, can't wait to retire and get no support from administrators. While I certainly have sympathy for these educators, I just wanted to say that I am very blessed to teach in a great district with outstanding young people. I work with a fantastic staff that I'm proud to call my friends and I look forward to going to work everyday! Anyone else out there like this?? :o)
