Not state fair.
Im not being a pessimist but what else can I do after the following:
1. Gave schedules out to ALL incoming band students in MAY.
2. Snail Mailed schedules out in JULY
3. Hard copy schedules again in AUGUST
4. Huge social media presence @ end of September and this first week of October.
Like I said, I feel like I have covered my bases and done all I can do. BUT if there is a better way or a different way I am ready to learn. I'm willing to do WHATEVER to get this to be better.
If you live in a rural community, you HAVE TO KNOW that the State Fair takes priority over EVERYTHING. Showing an animal at the State level is a HUGE deal and is THE way these kids make money on their animals. In some cases, they've invested thousands of dollars into that steer.
If this isn't a rural issue, then you need to do a better job communicating expectations to your kids and parents at the start of the year. Stick an alternate in that spot NOW and let the alternate learn the spot in time for contest.
If you don't have enough alternates, march the hole and make the kid earn the spot back.
I have had a FLOW of parents contact me saying they are going out of town next Friday/Saturday and their little Susies will not be there for football game OR contest.
Thing is.....THIS WEEK IS OPEN WEEK PLUS EARLY RELEASE FRIDAY AND NO SCHOOL MONDAY.
Yet...They will not be there the week before UIL.
How do I address this? I know it is not the students fault and dont want to place anger in the wrong place. How do I tell parents (without sounding like a nazi) about the expectations. For most of these kids its not them wanting to go, but their parents forcing them to go and miss. I want to tell the parents how it is and how important every person is yet I dont want to burn parent bridges that keeps their children out of the program in the future when it is NOT THE KIDS FAULT.
I HATE punishing kids for parents.
What do I say??
**Sorry rant over. Apologies for yelling**
