Kids not paying attention to stuff is 100% normal. Keep pointing it out to them. Maybe do some group sight-reading where you point out all of the various things they should be paying attention to. Keep making them do it right, eventually they'll start doing it right on their own. Point out and compliment them when they do it correctly.
I am having a hard time getting the students to put more mental effort into playing their articulations correctly. They slur when it is marked tongued and tongue when it is marked slurred. When I point it out to them, they do it correctly but why do I have to point that out to them?! Am I missing something in the teaching process? Is this a normal issue? Does it happen in other programs? Thank you for any help you can offer!
