Reed strength/quality/placement and embochure tension. Be sure they've got a decent quality reed (not orange Rico or anything cheaper). Be sure it's in good condition (case hamsters?). Be sure it's even from side to side and even with the tip of the mouthpiece. Be sure they're not squeezing (primary cause of most squeaks). Also, be sure they've got enough mpce in their face (about half the beak - most try to play with too little).
Now, check the horn. When they hit the octave key, is it bouncing? Is it clearing the pip by about the width of a pencil?
Of course it could be a dozen other things because saxophone is the easiest instrument to play wronng, but those have a good chance of fixing many ills.
My tenor player squeaks on G (top of the staff). The instrument has been repaired. It seems to only be this note. Any ideas?
