Re: Hiring Rant
My current staff is all brass. Iíve filled 3 positions in my time here, each time looking for a woodwind person, but the applicant pool and qualifications have led to hiring a brass person instead.
Maybe it's because they're hiring the best TEACHER and they don't care what instrument they play?
Seriously. You don't need a brass person, woodwind person, and percussionist at every campus. You don't even need them in every cluster. They help, but there are plenty of award-winning programs where all the directors play the same family.
I've noticed some high schools are very efficient when it comes to staffing. There is a WW, Brass and a Percussion "specialist" with the occasion of another director of some sort.
What I don't get is schools whose staff ONLY contains 2/3 categories. Why would you limit your students so? Is marching band that important that you must hire all brass teachers with drum corps experience that you lose a chance to really improve your woodwind section overall? Or vice versa if all the staff were woodwind players?
Ok, I get it, there are a ton of teachers that can teach both/everything very well. However, that is not the case with every program.
Just started noticing that with quit a few programs around my area.
TLDR; Why hire all brass or all woodwind staff at a high school?
Anyways, Good luck to all the marching bands this month!
