Here is what I did that that changed there tune. I was in the same boat. This was about 7 or 8 years ago. I found the excerpt of where the student can not get credit for the course if attendance is less than 90%. I sent it to the principals, counselors, and central office admins along with my concerns. Pullouts and anything that prevented me from doing my job ceased immediately. It just takes a little bit of push to get everyone on board. Sometimes they don't think of us as being part of the "core" classes. The mindset is still "extracurricular".
Hope this helps!
The Band Hall is obviously owned by the counselor. Any testing, any at all and the band is evicted to the auditorium. ASVAB, Benchmarks, PSAT. STAAR. 28 days lost last year. Can’t practice in the auditorium because they are also testing in the library right next to the auditorium. They need the band hall and practice rooms to give tests.
Kids being pulled out of band classes for reading remediation. 2 to 3 times a week.
HS Band moved to late afternoon to make scheduling easier for the counselor.
All of my band students that are in Cross Country have been gone once or twice a week. Not to mention other sports randomly leaving during band class.
Counselor constantly pulls kids out for things that could be taken care of at another time. She won’t let me know she has them until my attendance is wrong and the attendance clerk is asking me about it.
I’ve been told by higher ups “you have to fight for your program”. Been fighting for years. All out of ideas or fight.
Why do I have to beg to do my job??
TRS packet is on the way!!!
