DC Comics now owns the rights to Captain Marvel and The Marvel Family, the copyright originally held by Fawcett Publications.
(Long story short: During the Forties, DC Comics constantly sued Fawcett claiming that Capt. Marvel was a rip-off of Superman. Truth to the matter is that DC didn't like that Captain Marvel was out selling Superman so the did everything they could to stop Capt. Marvel from being published. Eventually DC won and in 1953 Fawcett stopped printing comics basically tired of the lawsuits and because Super-heroes weren't selling like they once were.)
20 years later DC Comics started publishing Captain Marvel Comics again and in one form or another have been putting The Big Red Cheese in various series since 1973.
The point I'm making here is why hasn't there been a celebration of this milestone? Other than My own Blog, "A View from a Goon" I haven't seen any mention of Cap's 70th birthday. Nothing on the comic book web-sites or the fan publications.
Back in 1988, DC Comics went all out celebrating Superman's 50th birthday and the following year Batman's. (By the way nothing was done for Captain Marvel's 50th.) Since then DC has done nothing for the 60th and 70th Anniversaries of their two top heroes. Word is that they don't want the comic reading public thinking that they're heroes are senior citizens.
I hope that you will all join me in getting the word out of Cap's Anniversary. If you have a web-site, blog, MySpace page or any type of web page, let the folks know that Captain Marvel turns 70 this year and help celebrate this important milestone.
Thank you
