Issued in 2007, the Humboldt pen is the 16th in the Patron Of Art editions, each in an edition of just 4810 pens. I bought the pen new in 2007 and have used it carefully a few times since. It is number 4160/4810in “as new” condition and complete with the lacquered wood case, edition document, card box and outer sleeve.

It is my personal favorite of the patron pens and I have had most of the early pens. The barrel and cap are made of grenadilla, a hardwood from the southern hemisphere, inlaid with sterling silver decoration. This celebrates Von Humboldt’s major 5-year expedition to South America in 1799 to 1804 to explore the natural world. The clip and section are also sterling silver and the two-tone 18k gold nib is platinum-plated to match and engraved with a sextant, used for navigation by Von Humboldt. The fine nib is a lovely smooth writer pen has the very reliable Montblanc piston-filler. The pen is a substantial 69g in weight and well-balanced with and without the cap posted.
