An English aerometric Parker 51 set of fountain pen and pencil, dove grey with rolled silver caps and gold plated clips, early 1950s. These rolled silver cap models were introduced in 1952, only made in England and in relatively low volume. Both pen and pencil show that they are early ‘50s production with the caps having simply the “Parker” imprint on the front and “R Silver” on the back. Later production had “R Silver” and “Made In England”.
The set is in excellent condition and complete with the case and outer card box. The pen still has the remnant of the shop chalk marks on the imprints, “Parker” and “Made In England” below the cap ring. The 14k nib is a medium point and a nice smooth writer. The so reliable aerometric filler works well. The pencil has an unused eraser under the cap.
In the words of David & Mark Shepherd’s “Parker 51”:
“Silver Pens
Unique to England was the production of a range of rolled silver pens, featuring a pattern of converging vertical lines and plain bands, identical to those found on gold insignia models. As a result of their comparatively limited, these are much rarer than examples in rolled gold and are extremely valuable. …… This tends to be the most sought after style of cap amongst English collectors.” Rolled silver, like rolled gold, is a laminate layer of silver rolled out over the steel cap, a much thicker than electroplating and hence able to be engraved.”
