The Taperite was Waterman’s postwar pen to compete with the success of the Parker 51. I am not sure what model of Taperite this burgundy pen is; it is slightly longer than the US-made Stateleigh. The barrel imprint is “WATERMANS MADE IN FRANCE”, perhaps a French version of the Stateleigh? The pen has the fashionable hooded nib and slip-cap but retains the deco design of the pre-war Waterman’s clip and the reliable lever filler. The cap is polished chrome with a fine line pattern at the bottom and the Waterman globe logo in the cap jewel.
The 14k nib is a fine point and writes with nice flex for line variation, typical of Waterman nibs. A lever filler, I fitted a new sac and the pen fills well and expels vigorously.
The pen is approximately 13.7cm capped and 15.6cm when the cap is posted.
The condition is good, a tool mark (I think) in the hooded section and a few scattered marks on the chrome cap visible under magnification.
The Taperite has been underrated, overshadowed by the technology and design of the Parker 51. But this pen has a more flexible nib than the 51 and the US-made Taperites I have used, maybe because it was made for the French market.
