A beautifully engraved Victorian presentation retracting dip pen and pencil with a name and date engraved: “TF Spencer 1896” The pen and pencil retracting sliders are ornately engraved and the mechanism works perfectly. It would probably have been used when travelling. The end has an amber jewel, which has not been engraved with a seal imprint. The jewel unscrews to reveal a small chamber; I thought at first that this was for storing pencil leads but the chamber is too small so I can only think it is to enable a change in the seal. The pen is fitted with a flexible nib with the imprint; “WILLIAM MITCHELL SELECTED MEDIUM”. The pencil uses 1.5 mm leads and it fitted with a lead.
Closed the pen is 10cm and with the nib or pencil extended about 11.5cm and with the pencil extended 11cm.
Despite the quality of the engraving I cannot see a hallmark for maker or silver so I assume it is some silver-like alloy. The pen is in excellent and working condition.
