Pilot Ultra Super 500 fountain pen with black lacquer barrel, 14k gold filled cap and large 14k integral nib with heart vent hole. It was made in made in 1958 -59. It was created by designer Shigeki Chiba and won a number of engineering awards. But the advanced design proved too costly to be profitable, and Pilot pulled it from production. Hence the production run was quite limited.
The resin barrel is coated with five layers of black lacquer with the name “Giovanni” neatly engraved and just the usual signs of use. The cap and clip are in very good condition with no brassing but there is a slight ding on the back which is difficult to see but can just about be felt. The pen has the excellent Pilot “switch” filler which has been professionally restored and works perfectly. The nib is a fine point and very smooth with just a hint of flex.
Andreas Lambrou in his definitive book “Fountain Pens of Japan” says: “In 1959 the Ultra Super 500 was launched in black lacquer with a gold- filled cap and a large 14 karat-gold insert nib. This pen is today rare and very valuable.”
This pen is personalised so in that sense not perfect but the price is much lower than if it did not have the engraved name.
