In the words of David & Mark Shepherd’s “Parker 51”:
“Silver Pens
Unique to England was the production of a range of rolled silver pens, featuring a pattern of converging vertical lines and plain bands, identical to those found on gold insignia models. As a result of their comparatively limited, these are much rarer than examples in rolled gold and are extremely valuable. …… This tends to be the most sought after style of cap amongst English collectors.”
(Rolled silver, like rolled gold, is a laminate layer of silver rolled out over the steel cap, a much thicker than electroplating and hence able to be engraved.)
The earliest rolled silver caps had the “Parker” imprint on the front of the cap band and “R Silver” of the back and this pen is one of the early models. (Later models had “Made in England” added below the R Silver imprint.)
The pen is in very good condition; the rolled silver cap has just one small ding on the side, shown in one of the photos. Otherwise the cap has only minor marks of use, no brassing of the rolled silver nor on the rolled gold clip. (Rolled silver caps are more prone to brassing than the rolled gold caps.) The barrel and hood are in excellent condition, the filler works perfectly and the medium nib is a very smooth soft writer.
