A custom Pelikan 1000 with etched silver overlay after Magritte’s iconic bowler hat motif which appears in more than 50 of his pictures. I commissioned this one-off from Ariel in 2015 as part of a Magritte series on different makes of pen. The overlay has AK’s logo on the barrel end. The big Pelikan 1000 medium nib has been customized by Richard binder to a lovely cursive italic. Closed the pen is 14.5cm and 17.5cm when the cap is posted. It weighs in at 44g. It has been inked just a few times and is in pristine condition.
The bowler hat motif appeared in more than 50 paintings by Magritte and in photos of the artist. Magritte said in 1966. “It is a headdress that is not original. The man with the bowler is just middle-class man in his anonymity. And I wear it. I am not eager to singularize myself.”
Bowlers were designed for the British middle class, first emerging during the second half of the 19th century. Wearers were middle-class distinguished from both the upper class top hat and the working class flat cap.
