The Daruma is a type of Japanese doll which is modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. According to the legend, he spent nine years meditating in front of a wall, which cost him his eyelids and limbs.
The Daruma doll serves as a physical representation of Bodhidharma’s unyielding willpower. It has the ability to rise no matter how many attempts are made to knock it over. Due to its resilient nature, the Daruma embodies the Japanese proverb Nana Korobi Ya Oki (fall seven, rise eight) and is seen as a good luck charm in Japan for those who have challenging goals that they are determined to bring to fruition.
Today Daruma is a familiar good luck charm for those who wish to succeed, and each color represents a particular field:
Yellow: Monetary fortune, Fame, Good luck
Blue: Success, Independence, Promotion
Red: Family Safety, Victories, Good luck
Green: Health, unlocking one’s potential, Increasing athletic potential
Black: Protection against bad luck and natural disasters, economic surplus.
The artists who have crafted these pens by hand are part of the “Kokokai” which is a group of exceptionally trained Maki-e artisans. The exquisite 18kt gold nib is available in fine, medium and broad.
This Namiki Yukari Daruma is delivered in a beautiful box with a leather pen pouch, convertor, and certificate. Only 300 pieces for the world!
