The Taperite was Waterman’s postwar pen to compete with the success of the Parker 51 and the Stateleigh was the top end of the Taperite line. The pen has the now fashionable hooded nib and slip-cap but retains the deco design of the pre-war Waterman’s clip and the reliable lever filler. The cap is 1/10 14k golf filled with a star imprint and “stacked coin” bands.
The barrel imprint is crisp, “WATERMAN’s MADE IN U.S.A”.
The nib is a fine point, a very smooth firm writer.
The pen is 13.3cm capped and 16cm when the cap is posted.
The condition is excellent, no brassing of the gold-filled trim, the black barrel is excellent and imprint crisp. The pen has been serviced and filles and writes well.
The Taperite has been underrated, overshadowed by the technology and design of the Parker 51. But the Stateleigh was well made, better then the later “Crusader” models, the nibs typically Waterman-smooth and the model was quite short-lived.
