An early black Parker 61 with the Heirloom silver and nickel rainbow cap, made in the USA between 1956 and 1959 with the capillary self-filling system.
The Silver and nickel rainbow cap proved difficult and expensive to manufacture and was only made for the first three years of the Parker 61, being discontinued in 1959. I believe the nickel and silver cap pens are more difficult to find than the gold rainbow caps.
The rainbow cap has the “61” imprint with “Parker Made IN The USA”. The section arrow matches the nickel/silver cap as does the barrel jewel. The nib is a fine point. The pen is 14cm capped and 14.8cm with the cap posted.
The 61 is a slimmer design than the 51 but retaining the hooded tubular nib, redesigned, with a gold-filled arrow to show which way up to use the nib, apparently! The Teflon capillary filler works well but was expensive to make and replaced with the cheaper Parker 45 piston converter in 1969. The rainbow caps – perhaps the most attractive feature of the early 61s - were also expensive and difficult to manufacture.
Condition: the pen is in excellent condition with just minor marks of use. The capillary filler has been flushed and loads ink perfectly with good capacity.
