A Parker 61 set of fountain pen and pencil with rage red barrels and heirloom rainbow rose and green gold filled caps.
The pen is a Mark 1 61 with the capillary filler which works very well.
The cap of the pen has the Parker 61 imprint and “Made in the USA”. (I am not sure if these Mark 1 capillary pens were only made in the U.S.A. and imported when launched in the UK?) The cap of the pencil also has the Parker 61 imprint but “Made in England”. The case looks to be English as well so the set probably dates to the launch of the Parker 61 in the UK in 1967.
The 61 is a slimmer design than the 51 but retaining the hooded tubular nib, redesigned, with a gold-filled arrow to show which way up to use the nib, apparently! The Teflon capillary filler works well but was expensive to make and replaced with the cheaper Parker 45 piston converter in 1969. The rainbow caps – perhaps the most attractive feature of the early 61s - were also expensive and difficult to manufacture.
Condition: the set is in excellent condition, pen, pencil and case. The capillary filler loads ink perfectly with good capacity and the feed to the nib is smooth. (The filler has been flushed.) The rage red barrels and the caps of both pen and pencil are in excellent condition with no brassing.
