This is an opportunity for a Duofold collector to own a rare bandless pen at a much lower price.
The red hard rubber Duofold was launched in 1921 and the model without the cap band was made in just two years, 1922-23, most in 1922. It was short-lived because Parker found that too many were returned, the red hard rubber caps prone to cracking at the lip, which had not been a problem with the black hard rubber. So cap bands became essential on new production. As a result of the short production life and returns these bandless cap pens are comparatively rare now. This pen has the crack at the lip, about 1cm.
The pen has the large Duofold and Lucky Curve imprints for 1922, feint but clearly legible. The large nib has the PARKER DUOFOLD PEN imprint, spear feed and is a fine point.
The pen comes complete with the original card box and instructions from 1922, the box having the tanager bird emblem which Parker used in its Duofold advertisements that year. The box and paper are in excellent condition, the box intact with just a little wear to the ends of the lid.
CONDITION: very good condition other than the cap lip crack which is approximately 1cm long. The crack had been repaired but re-emerged as I was taking photographs! It is almost invisible when the cap is on but appeared when I posted the cap on the barrel. As I would have to send the pen for repair again to the US I am selling it at a much lower price “as is”. The re-opened crack is the same size as before the repair so appears to be stable but should not be stressed. The gold filled clip has some brassing at the top and on the ball. The nib is a smooth soft fine writer.
