Two beautiful De La Rue Onoto “N” pens with almost identical art nouveau style overlays, made about 1912. Both are plunger fillers and both have under/over feed nibs.
The overlays have the same imprint: “ONOTO SELF FILLING FOUNTAIN PEN”. I believe the overlays were made in the US because the silver overlay is simply marked “STERLING” rather than having the DLR London hallmark.
Both pens appear in Steven Hull’s definitive book “Onoto The Pen” on pages 44 (gold filled) and 45 (sterling).
Gold Filled Overlay
Sterling Overlay Pen
The pens are 14.4cm closed and 17.5cm with the cap posted.
The under/over feed 14ct nibs are both medium stubs with some nice flex. The gold filled pen's nib is marked 14 carat warranted; the silver pen's nib is marked 14 carat Onoto.
Condition: both excellent.
The gold filled overlay pen: the overlay is in excellent condition with no brassing or dings. The black rubber has no fading and is still glossy. The pen has been restored, fills well and the stub nib is an expressive writer with nice flex.
The sterling overlay pen: the overlay is in excellent condition with just one ding at the top of the cap. The cap is tight to post, presumably because of some shrinkage. The pen has been restored, fills well and the stub nib is a smooth writer with some nice flex.
