The new NCAA Eligibility Rule is not "fully" effective until the 2027-28 school year ... for 2026-27 either the old rule (5 seasons to compete in 4) or the new rule can apply, whichever is better for the student-athlete.
The New Rule gives the student-athletes a fixed 5-year window to compete up to 5 seasons, with the 5 years starting when first enrolling, or the academic year starting after they turn 19, whichever comes first.
(So those starting college at age 18 in fall 2027 (or turning 19 before Sept 1, 2027), can compete through 2031-32, but if they turn 19 after Sept 1, 2027, they can wait to enroll until fall 2028 and still compete five seasons through 2032-33. No waivers, except for military service, pregnancy, and qualifying religious missions.)
OSU currently has a roster of 18 with possibly 9 that my be finished their gymnastics at OSU after the 2028 season!?
At least it will be clearer starting with the 2027-28 freshmen when their eligibility ends!
If the new rules had always been in effect ... this would be Paulina Vargas' last season as a "Junior" ... as she turned 19 in 2022 so would have been eligible to compete the five seasons 2022-23 through 2026-27, she started at OSU in the Fall of 2024!
Go Beavs!!,
