"The 1980 gymnastics team was coached by Ron Ludwig. The Beavers were regional champions and finished fourth nationally at AIAW, which was held at the University of Utah. The Beavers had five All-Around gymnasts, who competed in four events: Mary Ayotte, Linda Parker, Kris Femling, Carol Holmes and Connie Shuya."
The individual gymnasts on this team were...
" Mary Ayotte; Mary Berg; Kris Femling; Carol Holmes; Nancy Holmes; Stacy Jennings; Linda Parker; Connie Shuya; Kathy Yock "
Also, one of our long-time Gymnastics "Boosters" will be inducted as a coach!!
"One coach will be inducted, Astrid Hancock, who coached rowing from 1965-74 and swimming from 1972-73. Hancock's nine-year career saw women's rowing win one national title and other boats medal (top three respectively) nine times. Several others finished in the top 10. As the swimming coach, she was the first to help OSU be represented at the AIAW Championships in 1972."
One of the 21 individuals was on the gymnastics team! She was an 8-Sport athlete!!
"Lyla Voth – Competed in gymnastics, track, basketball, bowling, softball, volleyball, field hockey and tennis. She was a member of the first Oregon State gymnastics team to win a Pac-8 Championship. She was also a member of six conference championship teams."
I've never seen her name before, so she competed on the gymnastics team somewhere between 1967 & 1974.
I've also never heard of a "Pac-8 Championships" for Gymnastics ... this conference officially started in 1968 (& ended after 1986).
A gymnastics teams started in 1967.
1972 was the official start of Intercollegiate competition for gymnastics, sponsored by the AIAW
1975 was when OSU Gymnastics became a" Varsity "sport & when "Letters" began being awarded.
(OSU Gymnastics first competed in the Pac-10 Conference Championships in 1987 (with 8 gymnastics teams including WSU!); ...between 1983 & 1986 OSU Gymnastics competed in the Nor-Pac Conference Championships; ... between 1975 & 1981 OSU Gymnastics competed in the NCSWA Regionals, with no conference championships, & OSU's 1st National meet (after 1975?) was the 1979 AIAW Nationals; ... 1982 was the start of NCAA sponsorship of Regionals & Nationals.)
Go Beavs!!,
Richard
